In 1950, Alabama had a population of 3,061,743. Whites comprised almost 68 percent of the population, and African Americans, 32 percent. Only 2,535 people identified themselves as some other race. Alabama was historically a rural state, but the Depression and World War II had prompted many residents to move to urban areas in search of employment. By the 1950s, more Alabamians lived in cities than in the country.
